Marion Clyde Long - July 30, 2009
Marion Clyde Long died Sunday, July 26, 2009 at Heritage of Wauneta Nursing Home in Wauneta. He was 82 years old.
Marion was born on March 1, 1927, in Riverton, Neb., to Winifred Haskel and Hazel Edna (North) Long. He entered the US Navy on April 25, 1945 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on May 18, 1946.
Marion was united in marriage to Alberta “Bertie” Marie Parde on August 21, 1944 at St. Francis, Kan. To this union five children were born.
They made their home in the Wauneta, Imperial and Grant communities where Marion farmed, as well as being a mechanic for the Ford Garage in Wauneta.
In 1956, the family moved to Oregon where Marion and Bertie worked for an orchard farm. He later took training and began working for the Oregon Correctional Institute as a guard later becoming a Sergeant. He retired in 1983. They eventually moved back to Wauneta where he was living at the time of his death.
Marion was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, woodworking and just the everyday fixings of things.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Winifred and Hazel Long; two sons, Jimmie Michael and Timothy J. Long; one daughter, Linda Lee Hawkins; one brother, Bud Long; and one sister, Shirley Long.
Survivors include his wife of almost 65 years, Bertie Long of Wauneta; one son, David Long of Salem, Ore.; one daughter, Diane Cummings of Big Springs; one brother, Irvin Long and wife, Thelma, of McCook; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given in his name.
Visitation will be today, Thursday, July 30, 2-6 p.m. at the Liewer Funeral Home in Wauneta.
Graveside funeral services will be Friday, July 31, 2009, 10 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Wauneta with Pastor Keith Wellman officiating.
Pallbearers were Irvin Long, Jacob Long, B.J. Sierzega, Anthony Ogden, Mike Doman and Eric Barnard.
Honorary pallbearers were Michael Long, Mark Ogden, Donna Long, Trina Long and Tena Barnard.
Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.
Liewer Funeral Home of Wauneta is in charge of the arrangements.
