Longhorns avenge loss to Perkins County with SPVA win PDF Print E-mail

The Chase County Longhorns suffered the sting of seeing another game get away from them in the final seconds.
After leading Perkins County here last Thursday for the entire second half, the Longhorns fell victim to a pair of treys in the closing minute.
The first came with just 45 seconds left to play, when the Plainsmen’s Quinton Hite hit his second trey of the quarter, knotting the score at 47-47.
The Longhorns milked the clock down before a turnover in the final five seconds gave the Plainsmen the ball.
Despite some in-your-face defense by the Longhorns, Hite hit a running trey with one second left to steal the game from the Longhorns 47-50.
On Monday, the Longhorns got another shot at the Plainsmen, facing them in the opening round of the SPVA tournament in North Platte.
The Longhorns took an eight-point, 29-21, lead into the final quarter. However, they couldn’t get the ball to fall and saw their margin dwindle to three.
Free throws have been a nemesis for the Longhorns this season but it was free throws that made the difference for them Monday in the final quarter.
In the last 15 seconds, Kyle Bottom and Alex Strand each dropped one of two free throw attempts. This proved to be enough to allow the Longhorns to skate by the Plainsmen, 36-32,  and avenge their regular season loss, four days prior.
Into the semi-finals
The win advanced the Longhorns to the semi-finals of the SPVA tournament tonight (Thursday) where they will face the top-seeded 9-1 North Platte St. Pat’s Irish.
The game is set for 5 p.m. MT at the North Platte Community College gym.
While the Longhorns’ win Monday night wasn’t exactly pretty, Coach Carl Zuege said, it go them into the semi-finals of the tournament.
In addition, he said it instilled some confidence in his team that they can close one out.
While free throws down the stretch capped the win, Zuege said it was their defensive rebounding that made the difference in the game.
He said they controlled the defensive boards and limited Perkins County to just one shot many times throughout the game.
And in Monday’s game, it was Perkins County who struggled at the line, going just 9-20 while the Longhorns hit 50 percent, 7-14.
Bounce-back win
Zuege was especially pleased to see his kids respond Friday night, when they had to travel to Gothenburg.
Despite the sting from the Perkins County loss the night before, the Longhorns bounced back resiliently for a 57-44 win over the Swedes.
They hit free throws in the final quarter and put the game away, he noted. Eight of their 14 fourth-quarter points came from the line as the Longhorns went 14-19 for the game.
That too proved to be a real confidence builder going into SPVA, Zuege said.
His players looked exhausted mentally and physically after Monday’s crucial win, he noted.
In six days, the Longhorns played four games, culminating with the tournament win.
A week ago Tuesday, the Longhorns made a mid-week visit to Southern Valley, notching the first win of the four-game run.
At Southern Valley, the Longhorns jumped out to a 29-15 halftime lead and controlled the game the rest of the way for a 51-42 win.
On Thursday, they played host to Perkins County before heading to Gothenburg Friday, which was followed up by Monday’s opening round game in SPVA.
Scoring breakdowns for the four games follow.
