Longhorns split to go into break at 2-4 PDF Print E-mail

Coach Zuege sees a big improvement in defense

While the Longhorns may have dropped a 43-25 loss to the Yuma Indians, Coach Carl Zuege said his team played some of their best defense of the year.
After their loss to Ogallala, Zuege said he and his team decided they were going to have to be able to play man-to-man defense to compete with the remaining teams on the schedule.
So, last week in practice, they devoted much of their time working on a man defense, as well as executing their offense against the man-to-man.
“It really helped us,” Zuege said.
They played man against Yuma the whole game and Zuege credited them for a really good defensive effort. They held a very athletic Yuma team to just 43 points.
The defensive effort is something we can build on, he said. “If we can do that, that will help us every game we play.”
“Now, we just have to get our 50 points,” referring to the Longhorns inability to score Thursday night against Yuma.
“It’s never pretty to score just 25 points,” he said.
The Longhorns trailed by 10 at half and got it down to six in the third quarter before Yuma opened it back up to 15 after three.
In addition to shooting poorly, the Longhorns struggled at the line, going just 5-13 while Yuma hit 7 of 8.
Zuege said Daniel Regier and Tanner Stromberger did a good job of controlling the boards.
Offensively, Regier led the team with 11 followed by eight from Stromberger.

Win boosts season mark to 2-4
The Longhorns went into the Christmas break with a 49-44 win over Garden County Friday night.
They jumped to a 17-12 lead after the first quarter, with Stromberger getting eight of his game-high 17 points in the first quarter.
By halftime, the Longhorns built their lead to eight, 30-22.
In the second half, the Longhorns allowed Garden County to stay in the game.
It was one of those games where they just couldn’t pull away, Zuege said.
He blamed a large part of that to the Longhorns’ inability to capitalize on free throws.
In the third quarter, the Longhorns went to the line nine times, dropping only three.
They missed five more in the fourth quarter as well.
The six missed free throws in the third allowed Garden County to pull back within five, 35-30.
The Longhorns continued to maintain the lead, building it to as many as 11.
Garden County answered with a pair of treys late in the game to make it a tight game going down the stretch.
However, the Longhorns never relinquished the lead as they kept their man-to-man defense on for the whole night to get the 49-44 win.
Zuege said his team can’t continue to miss opportunities at the charity stripe.
After a 5-13 effort against Yuma, the Longhorns went 9-20 at Garden County.
That’s not good enough, Zuege said.
In addition to Stromberger’s 17, Jeff Banks added 11 with three treys in the contest.
