Walter Albert Hofman - June 11, 2009


Walter Albert Hofman, age 92, of Imperial, Neb. was called home by our Savior Jesus Christ, departing this life on Thursday, June 4, 2009, at his home.
Walt was born on June 11, 1916, southeast of McCook, Neb. to Henry Hofman, Sr. and Dorothea Wall Hofman, the 14th of 17 children.
He was baptized and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Ash Creek by Rev. Fredrickson. Walt’s confirmation verse is “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God; I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10).
Walt was a lifelong member of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Imperial for many years. He served many positions in the church as elder, financial secretary, trustee, Sunday school teacher, etc.
Walt married Elsie Anna Agnes Gruber on Aug. 26, 1941 at Salem Lutheran Church southwest of Elwood, Neb. To this union four sons were born: Kenneth, Glenn, Donnie and Stanley.
They first settled at Norton, Kan. where Walt continued to learn the mechanic trade. They moved to Imperial in 1942 and Walt worked in several places including the International Harvester dealership before starting a partnership in 1959 with his brother, Victor. The two brothers worked in the partnership until Victor’s death in 2007 when Walt was 91.
Walt loved to garden taking pride in his watermelons, muskmelons and sweet corn.
He planned many vacations with Elsie, taking all the children to 48 or 49 states.
He drew up plans and built the house that he lived and died in. They resided in this home for 67 years.
He also played the guitar and harmonica. He was a very talented welder, mechanic and machinist.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, seven sisters and one grandson, Brad Hofman, in 2008.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Elsie, of Imperial, Neb.; four sons, Kenneth and wife, Sharon, of Bellevue, Neb., Glenn and wife, Carol, of Elwood, Neb., Don and wife, Amy, of Marysville, Kan. and Stan of Champion, Neb.
Other survivors include grandchildren, Lance Hofman of Florida; Lisa Clark of Omaha, Neb.; Eric Hofman of Africa, Kate Reiners of Elwood, Neb., Betsy Hofman of Omaha, Jake Hofman of Clay Center, Neb., Billy Hofman of Fort Wayne, Ind., Ben Hofman of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Stuart Hofman of North Carolina and John Hofman of Knoxville, Tenn.; step-grandchildren, Jamey Balthazor of Elwood, Neb., Wendy Balthazor of Illinois, Warren Wells of Nebraska, Wesley Wells of Ohio, Paul Dawkins of Texas, Janice Haarberg of Imperial, Matt Dawkins of Colorado and Meghan Parker of Colorado; two sisters, Dora Malone of McCook, Neb. and Erma Hoeme of Scott City, Kan.; sister-in-law, Helen Hofman of Salida, Colo. and brother-in-law, George Gruber of Lexington, Neb.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Imperial, Neb. with Pastor David A. Kahle and Vicar Matthew Makela officiating.
Casketbearers were Jake Hofman, Daren Clark, Lance Hofman, Billy Hofman, Ben Hofman, Stuart Hofman, John Hofman and Kevin Reiners.
Honorary casketbearers were Byron Hust, Cal German, Eldon Gager and Brad Wheeler.
Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery in Imperial, Neb.
Memorials have been established to Zion Lutheran Church or The Lutheran Hour.
Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
