Glenn Harless - December 17, 2009


Glenn Harless, 71 of Sidney, Neb. passed away on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 at his home in Sidney.
Glenn Wayne Harless was born Oct. 31, 1938 in Bridgeport, Neb. to Wayne and Etha (Smith) Harless.
Glenn attended country school and high school at Bridgeport, Neb. graduating in 1957. During his high school years, Glenn played guard for the Bridgeport Bulldogs football team and ran track.
After high school, Glenn enrolled at Sioux Falls College (now the University of Sioux Falls) participating in football again as a guard and center. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Education with an emphasis in mathematics and physics.
On Aug. 26, 1960 he wed his college sweetheart, Patricia Johnson, a nursing student at Sioux Valley Hospital. The wedding was held at Brooklyn Evangelical Free Church, where Glenn and Pat had met three years earlier.
Glenn’s education career included teaching in Bayard, Lorenzo, Imperial, and Sidney, Neb. as well as Etna, Calif., and a principalship at Lorenzo.
While at Imperial, he drew upon his previous systems analyst experience, automating the administration records and introducing Chase County High School students to one of the first high school computer programming classes in the state.
He was awarded several National Science Foundation grants, including fellowships at Utah State University, Bemidjii State College and Chadron State College. His interest in computers and programming continued to grow as he completed numerous post-graduate courses and continued to upgrade the systems and courses where he taught.
Before retiring from education in 2002, his position at Sidney Public Schools involved managing a network of over 400 user sites. After retirement, he was employed by Adams & Son Trucking in Sidney.
Raised in a farming family, Glenn loved the outdoors, working in farming and heavy equipment construction throughout his life.
He enjoyed travelling, camping, riding motorcycles with family and friends, and all kinds of sports.
Mechanically inclined, he loved tinkering on his ’64 GTO, Model A Ford and his BMW motorcycle.
Glenn accepted Christ as his personal Savior as a young adult and lived his life in honor to his Lord. He enjoyed fellowship in a weekly men’s Bible Study group at his home church in Sidney.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Patricia Harless of Sidney; son, Michael Harless and wife, Kelli, of Escondido, Calif.; daughter, Lisa Harless Kucera, and husband, Gordon, of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; grandsons, Benjamin, Glenn, Zachary and Jack Harless; granddaughters, Leah, Gretchen and Abigail Kucera; brothers, Royal of Bridgeport, Neb., Willard of Sacramento, Calif., Lloyd of Park Rapids, Minn. and Daryl of Red Bluff, Calif.; sisters, Nancy Harless Brown of Bennett, Neb. and Debbie Harless Knutson of Trent, SD; 36 nieces and nephews and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Etha Harless; and sister, Norreta Harless Kraski.
A celebration of Glenn’s life will be held Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the Sidney Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Doug Birky officiating.
Inurnment will be in the Oregon Trail Cemetery at Bridgeport, Neb. at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
Gifts in Glenn’s memory may be sent to the Sidney Evangelical Free Church, First Baptist Church of Bridgeport, Camp Rock in Reddington, Neb., or to the donor’s choice.
Cremation has been held and there is no viewing at the funeral home.
