Three youths have been injured in the past five years during the annual FFA mud volleyball tournament on the Fourth of July. However, none was more affected than 19-year old Paula Leibbrandt, who received a cut during this year’s contest.
Her injury, which turned a little cut into a lingering infection, came right when she needed to pick and sell her sweet corn for her FFA project.
Liebbrandt said she stepped on something during the mud volleyball tournament, held for the first time this year on the old football field.
It was a little cut on the ball of her foot, and she “went on with the day. I ignored it and got dirty.”
She did visit the on-site ambulance, where personnel cleaned the cut with peroxide and told her to go home.
That night the foot had swelled up. She was sent from Chase County Community Hospital to the North Platte hospital on July 5, where her foot was operated on that night.
