Tom Terryberry of Imperial will serve as the chair for Republican River Basin Water Sustainability Task Force.
Terryberry, who serves on the board of the Upper Republican Natural Resources District (URNRD), won a 11-10 vote to serve as the task force’s chair.
The task force was created with the passage of LB 1057 during this year’s legislative session. The bill was introduced by Sen. Tom Carlson of Holdrege.
Gov. Dave Heineman appointed the 22-member task force in late May and they met for the first time in McCook Wednesday, June 22.
LB 1057 outlines the task force to define water sustainability in the basin and to develop and recommend a plan to reach that definition.
Heineman attended last week’s inaugural meeting. He urged members to find common ground and a common consensus regarding the challenges of water sustainability in the basin.
After being elected chair, Terryberry emphasized the need to work together. He said NRD members and state officials have worked hard to find workable solutions for the basin.
