We can at least be thankful for volleyball

Dry the tears, put your Husker gear back on.

We were in Colorado for Thanksgiving this year, and one of the big events I looked forward to was Friday’s Husker football game against Iowa. I believed, going into the game, I’d have much for which to be thankful afterwards. While we enjoyed the game in a local eatery with lots of TVs, it was a bit strange not to be in a place filled with Husker fans.
But after the game ended the way it did, losing by three points on a field goal in the final seconds, I was glad we were left alone in our post-game sorrow. And, doubly glad we weren’t playing Colorado like the Friday-after-Thanksgiving schedule used to have us.
Final score: 27-24. We were that close to finishing at .500 and becoming bowl eligible again.
Well, fans, it’s time to dry the tears, put your Husker gear back on and support a Nebraska team that  can put a smile back on our faces.
And, that’s the Husker volleyball team! They just earned the No. 5 seed in the NCAA tournament that starts this weekend. They open play Friday in Lincoln with a first round game against Ball State from Muncie, Indiana.
The Husker volleyball team is making its 38th straight NCAA tournament appearance, has been to the last four NCAA semi-finals and won national championships in 2015 and 2017. They were national runners-up last year after losing a grueling, five-set match to Stanford.
The 25-4 Husker women have the ability and desire to make some noise in this year’s tournament. Will they get to the finals again this year? It’s certainly possible the way they can play.
While I love football as much as the next guy or gal, I’m hoping Head Coach Scott Frost and his staff can get the program turned around. Here in Nebraska, we are very impatient fans, especially when it comes to football. I’ll put that on the back burner because, for right now, I’m cheering for the ladies.
