UNL shouldn’t bow to liberal pressure

Graduate instructor harassed student recruiting for conservative group.

This past week, I was finally getting caught up on some of the statewide news I’ve missed during the busy Chase County Fair week, and one story caught my attention.
Many of you might remember the incident at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) two years ago involving then graduate student instructor Courtney Lawton, who was photographed and video-taped harassing a UNL student recruiting for the conservative group Turning Point USA. The student was at a table outdoors on campus when Lawton reportedly “flipped off” the student. You can watch a video online showing Lawton, as she walked back and forth near the student’s table, calling the student a “neo-fascist” and someone against public education because she was recruiting for a student organization that wants to restrict big government.
Lawton lost her teaching post at UNL in 2017-18, and now a university professors group wants UNL to apologize and possibly provide her some restitution. It could also include awarding Lawton emeritus status.
Those actions could get UNL off a “censure list” put out by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).
