Time vs. gifts often means more

Giving time can mean so much more during the Christmas season.

Many of us fret and worry about getting that perfect gift for those on our Christmas list. That may send us out shopping for hours, especially when it comes down to the final days as it is now. Maybe there’s another option for feeling the real Christmas spirit vs. feeling anxious during these mid-December days.
Sometimes, we all need to take the opportunity to move away from those “lists,” and look instead around our community for other  to-do’s. There are a lot of people in need and some who have suffered recent tragedies, too. Services in our community that either help others or can bring some joy to their lives may also need a boost from some volunteer time.
A recent story in this newspaper addressed needs at the Chase County Pantry. Supplies were down a bit in several areas. Most of us can find some resources to donate food there for those in need. Or, maybe the regular pantry volunteers would welcome some relief in filling their hours?
There’s a community Christmas dinner approaching on Dec. 25 that can also use more volunteers. Several churches in the community are participating in the food preparation. Check the announcements at your church and consider signing up to provide some of the food for that community effort overseen by the Chase County Ministerial Association. What a beautiful, timely way to provide a nice meal to those who may not have the means to provide one, or who may be alone for Christmas.
Maybe you know of someone who is alone, or just lonely, this time of year. Presents are great and gift-giving recalls the gifts the Magi brought to Baby Jesus, but sometimes giving time means so much more.
There are many needs around us, and yes we are all busy. Giving the gift of time and resources to others in need will help us all discover the real spirit of Christmas.
