Staying informed helps keep eye on government

Every once in awhile, a local issue fires up the community. One of those issues is before city officials right now regarding the Scott and Stephanie Moser property.
    About 20 people were at Monday’s city council meeting, many interested in what their city council representatives were going to do regarding the property Scott’s Pump Service, the Mosers’ business, sits on.
    Their business building, which burned in a February fire, sits on property the city purchased using Imperial’s LB 840 sales tax money. As an economic development incentive, the owners were given a $161,450 price reduction on the two lots they bought. Those incentives are designed to spur business and employment in the community.
    Questions and input were good Monday night from several who attended, and the council got a strong feeling on where people stand on use of their sales tax fund. That included a strong emphasis that the receiving party of those benefits follow through with responsibilities promised by their signatures in the real estate agreement.
    And that’s how it should be—city voters approved the institution of the 1 percent sales tax in 2009 and have every right, and responsibility, to watch critically how it’s used. It would be great to see that kind of interest and involvement in all of the meetings of government entities.
