More dismay with major league sports
Baseball is by far my favorite sport, but recent actions by Major League Baseball have nixed the attendance at professional baseball games from my list of summer activities.
The higher-ups in the MLB organization have again left people wondering why professional athletics have become so embroiled in politics. Hey folks, we just want to watch baseball not listen to your political diatribe.
Most fans don’t want you involved in politics—most recently that of the newly-enacted voting laws in Georgia. Yet, MLB announced the past week it was moving the July All-Star Game out of Atlanta because of what it believes restricts voting rights.
It’s a real disappointment.
No matter what you think of the new law, whether it does or does not infringe on voting accessibility, that’s for the politicians to fight over—AND the residents of Georgia. By the way, THEIR elected state representatives passed the law.
One thing I continue to hear from those opposed to the law is its new requirement for voter ID when casting absentee ballots, especially for the black population. Wow, how is that blocking access to voting when nearly everything else we do requires ID? Don’t you need an ID to fly on a plane, to get a vaccine and last time I went to a game I believe I had to show ID to pick up my Denver Rockies baseball tickets!
And what does that teach our youths especially? If you don’t agree with someone or something, just walk out.
The Georgia politicians who were screaming about the new voting laws and encouraging such action that MLB took are probably kicking themselves now. Estimates show that moving the game out of Atlanta is going to cost businesses and the economy there up to $100 million in lost revenues.
So much for supporting your state’s residents.
I’m just glad we have local baseball teams like those here in Imperial that we can watch this summer.
