Young softball team looks to next year

A young softball team at Chase County Schools is looking for better things to come.
Coach Denise Smith wrapped up the season with a review of the 2018 stats after closing out the year at the district tournament earlier this month.
She admits they would’ve liked to have finished better than 2-25, but told players and parents at the start of the season that it could be “a rough year and not easy.”
That’s because Chase County had a very young team this season with no seniors, just two returning varsity starters and an entirely new varsity pitching staff.
Also, three of the players were out most of the season with either injuries or illness.
She believes more experience will help cut down the 97 team errors they recorded in their 27 games.
Pitchers will also have to develop, she said. All four who pitched in the varsity games, Carissa Hill, Sydnie Allen, Morayah Cupp and Morgan Peterson, were new to varsity competition.
But there’s one big plus that will show up next year—all 13 on the 2018 roster could return. Smith also hopes for several new players either from transfers or from this year’s eighth grade class.
