Wrestlers get quick start to new season

    It was crazy.
That’s how Coach Matt Vlasin described the opening week of the Chase County wrestling season.
With a new tournament wedged in between the traditional openers, the Longhorns had three meets in a row as the season opened last week.
On Thursday, they competed at the Garden County/Bridgeport triangular, on Friday they were part of the Elwood Invitational then, on Saturday, wrestled at the Broken Bow tournament.
Elwood was the new date added this year.
It replaces one of the two days at the Chadron tournament in January. The Longhorns will still attend Chadron’s meet, but only on Saturday, Jan. 25.
While Coach Vlasin said all three opening week meets were good ones, it was a little tough being this early in the season.
With fewer days to practice before the openers, compounded with a pair of snow days, conditioning was not where it should be, he said.
“We really saw it at Elwood,” Vlasin said.
“By the third rounds, you could really see the effect.”
However, he said at this time of year, it’s about getting onto the mat and wrestling.
At the triangular in Oshkosh last Thursday, Chase County finished 1-5 in head-to-head matches against Garden County. Trevor Peterson was the only Chase County winner with a first period pin in the 195 lb. matchup.
