WP splits with St. Pat’s, Arapahoe over holidays

It took longer than expected, but the Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team is 6-4 after losing to North Platte St. Pat’s and beating Arapahoe at last week’s Arapahoe Holiday Tournament.
Games were supposed to be Monday and Tuesday, then Tuesday and Wednesday, before finally being played Wednesday and Thursday.
Despite thinking WP had a good tournament at Arapahoe, Bronco Head Coach Matt Cox said he thought the lay off hurt his team’s conditioning.
“We should have practiced on Monday, but by the time the game decisions were made late in the day, it was spitting ice already,” Cox said.
WP played 7-2 NPSP in the first round.
Cox said the Broncos had their chance to beat the Irish, but committed too many fouls and St. Pat’s hit too many free throws.
A conventional three point play by Peyton Cox and two free throws from Cali Cox gave WP a 5-4 lead. Baskets from Alexa Sandman and Payton Yearous would boost the Broncos to a 9-5 advantage, but the Irish scored eight straight points to take the lead. A Chloe Stehno free throw and P. Cox basket around an Irish three pointer left the Broncos trailing 12-16 at the end of the first period.
Five points by the Irish to start the second quarter put WP in a nine point hole, 12-21. Haylee Sandman hit two baskets to close that gap, and after another Stehno free throw, WP was back to within four points. P. Cox scored twice on put backs and C. Cox added a layup to keep the score close, but two Irish free throws to close the half made it 23-28.
With a three pointer by C. Cox and two pointer from H. Sandman, WP quickly tied the game in the third quarter. NPSP lived at the line over the half’s first five minutes, making 7-9 free throws. Yearous made two baskets and P. Cox one as WP stayed within four points, 36-40. After baskets by Zoey Boos and C. Cox, the Broncos trailed 40-45 heading into the fourth quarter.
Though WP held the Irish to two fourth quarter field goals, the Broncos only made one themselves. In addition, NPSP hit 6-12 from the charity stripe while WP made 2-4 over the final eight minutes of the 44-56 loss.
