Williams, 3200-meter relay bring home state medals

Chase County’s Longhorn boys came home from the Class C state track meet with medals in the high jump and the 3,200-meter relay.
Coach Carl Lutz said the highlight for the boys’ meet came Friday morning.
Senior Cody Williams got the Longhorns off to a good start, wining a medal in the high jump. He scored eight of the Longhorns’ 11 points with a second place finish in the event.
Williams and St. Paul’s Miles Griffith went head-to-head, each clearing 6-2, 6-4 and 6-6. They were the only two jumpers in Class C to clear 6-6.
Williams held the advantage when he was the first to clear 6-8, only to have Griffith come back and match him again.
The bar then went to 6-9. Williams was unable to clear the height but Griffith did to secure first.
Williams was still in the middle of the high jump when he had to go run the 110 meter high hurdles.
His heat was halted halfway into the race when the timing didn’t start correctly.
After a short delay, the race started over with Williams running a 16.21 for a fourth place finish in his heat.  He would have had to better 15.9 to make finals.
Shortly after the high jump, he had to compete in the triple jump.
Zuege said Williams seemed out of rhythm and never got off a good jump. He went 41-03 but needed a jump of 41-09.5 to get into medal contention.
On Friday, the boys’ 3200-meter relay ran an  8:31.6. Although it was slightly slower than their district time, it was  similar to what they had been running this season.
More importantly, it earned Bryson Fisher, Scott Wheeler, Francisco Barrientos and Caleb Weiss a state medal with a sixth place finish.
On Saturday, Juan Venegas joined the trio of Fisher, Wheeler and Weiss in the 1,600-meter relay, which finished 13th with a time 3:34.3. They needed to better 3:31.4 to get into medal contention.
Junior Will Kuenne qualified in both the 3,200 Friday and 1,600 meter run Saturday.  His best finish came in the 3,200 with an 11th place finish in 10.19.5. He needed a 10:15.2 or better to medal.
In the 1,600, Kuenne came in at 4:45.8. He needed to knock off 10 seconds to vie for a medal.
A lesson in life
Sometimes life just isn’t fair. Williams learned that Saturday in the long jump.
Williams’ first two jumps, with a best of 20-01.5, still hadn’t qualified him for the finals. But his best jump of the three came on the last one.
