Western teams fall early in girls’ tourney

Most western Nebraska teams in the girls’ state basketball tournament last week saw their season end early in the three-day tourney.
The two state-qualifying teams on Chase County’s schedule—Dundy Co. Stratton and Sidney—both lost their first round games last Thursday. Nearby Maywood-Hayes Center lost its opener, as well.
Wahoo, who defeated the Lady Longhorns in the district final to get to state, also fell in the C1 first round. Also in C1, Chadron lost its first game.
Also from the west, Scottsbluff in Class B did win its opener against Bennington, but fell in the semi-finals.
The state championship teams included Lincoln Pius X in Class A, Crete in B, North Bend in C1, Hastings St. Cecilia in C2, Pleasanton in D1 and Wynot in D2.
Crete was the only top-seeded team to win the title.
