Weather threatens again, but Phillips Co. raceway gets one in

    The first night of races at Phillips County Raceway has the 2017 season off to a strong and exciting start.
    Despite nasty weather being right on the verge of spoiling the event, those faithful fans who attended Sunday were not disappointed, and all scheduled events were completed.
    Seventy-three cars came through the gate—the most in the last two years, according to raceway manager Joe Bellm.
    “The car count was great, and we’re still looking to grow,” he added.
    In addition to the regular IMCA lineup of modifieds, sport mods, stock cars, hobby stocks and compacts, Sunday’s event featured late models and dwarfs.
    Results of each division follow, with winners listed in order of placing:
Late models—Justin Bussell, Lyndon Bolt, Ryan Gaylord, Scott Cimfl, Maria Hankins, Albert Sack, Mike Jensen, Brandon Lewis and Scott Lewis.
Dwarfs—Brad Bayne, Jacob Hazlett, Keith Welch, James McNatt, car 66, Jerry Hunter and Leroy Dilka.
IMCA modifieds—Bill Drack, Brandon Clough, Jeremy Frenier, A.J. Valim, John Burrow Jr., Don Geist, Greg Sharpe, Frank Gastineau, Dick Brack and Terry Fletcher.
IMCA northern sport mods—Danny Concelman, Ryan Moser, Jacob Fehler, Cody Dewester, Steven Lewis, Ricky Saunders, Bryan Herrick, Becky Dechant, Tom Nelson Jr., Trevor Confer, Scott Saunders, Lance Brandt, Zach Ruder, Brian Cross, Bill Smith and Tom Quint.
IMCA stock cars—Kyle Clough, Stroker Ace, John Luck, Tony Walker, Michael Brunswig, Lloyd Meeske, Phil Reid and Billy Aeby.

weekend races scheduled
    Bellm is expecting a sold-out crowd for the next event at Phillips County Raceway Sunday, May 28, starting at 5 p.m.
    Sprint car fans will be pleased to know that one of the two Lucas Oil 360 ASCS Spring Nationals shows in Colorado is scheduled for Holyoke, and World of Outlaw champion Sammy Swindell will be competing.
    Also on the schedule for May 28 are dwarf state races. The usual modifieds, sport mods, stock cars, hobby stocks and compacts will take the track, and truck and 600s races will round out the full night of competition.
