Weather hampers state golf meets

Klooz finishes middle of pack in Class C

Weather proved to be the story for this year’s high school state golf tournaments.
Originally, two-day tournaments for all classes were scheduled to start on Tuesday, May 21.
Mother Nature put a stop to that in all four classes with rain that fell in much of the state.
As a result, the Nebraska School Activities Association called off all four tournaments on Tuesday—Class A in Norfolk, Class B in Columbus, Class C in Kearney and Class D in North Platte.
That resulted in a one-day, 18-hole meet on May 22.
Mother Nature didn’t cooperate the best on the following day either.
In Kearney, Chase County senior Karsen Klooz faced cold and windy conditions that affected scores for much of the field.
CCS Coach Jeff Gleisberg said the weather affected Klooz on his opening nine holes, where he shot a 50.
Gleisberg said Klooz played much better on the back nine, shooting a 42. However his first nine took him out of medal contention.
Klooz’s 92 tied him for 43rd in the 95-player field.
Preston Carbaugh of Cambridge won the tournament with a 74. Only seven golfers broke 80.
Grand Island Central Catholic claimed a one-stroke victory for the Class C team title,  defeating Battle Creek 324-325.
Perkins County qualified for the meet and finished 15th with a team total of 409.
Jacob Woodmancy led the Plainsmen with an 11th place finish, shooting an 82.
