Varsity softball goes up against Holyoke, Southern Valley, Perry

Hardly finding time to breathe much between contests, Chase County’s varsity softball team played five games over four days last week.
While the team is still looking for its first varsity win, Coach Denise Smith said they are beginning to blend together better as a team.
They are playing more relaxed, she said, but as that improved, the team errors saw a slight upward trend in games the past week against Holyoke, Colorado, So. Valley and Perry, Oklahoma.
That needs to improve, she said, because the game schedule does not let up in the coming weeks and competition won’t get easier.
In fact, the varsity team will play five games this weekend in Scottsbluff, then on Tuesday next week, travel back to Gering for a varsity double-header.
With low roster numbers, Smith said they are playing only in the varsity division at the Scottsbluff tourney Friday and Saturday. Chase County’s first game Friday wasn’t known at press time. Teams were to be seeded Wednesday night after taking in Tuesday game results, Smith said.
On Sept. 11 in Gering, the two varsity games get underway at 4:30 p.m.
They’ll be back at home next Friday, Sept. 14, for a single varsity game against Chadron at 4 p.m.
Holyoke games
Chase County dropped both varsity games at Holyoke Aug. 28.
Errors and mistakes hampered any progress Chase County could make in the opener, losing 2-17.
After their first at-bat and no runs scored, Chase County gave up 11 runs to Holyoke in the bottom of the first. That was too big a hole to come back from, Smith said.
