Two Chase County wrestlers came home with medals from Friday’s So. Valley Tournament, a new competition the Longhorns first attended last season.
Trevor Peterson, at 182 lbs., finished the tournament undefeated, pushing his season record to 13-1 entering this week’s action.
Kenyan Biesecker took third at the 138 lb. class.
Overall, Coach Matt Vlasin saw improvement in his team from the week before.
“But, we still have a long ways to go,” he said.
Peterson had four matches, winning two by pin and two by decision en route to the championship.
“It wasn’t his best outing, but he overcame some things to win his matches,” Vlasin said.
Along the way, Peterson put away two wrestlers ranked in Class D.
Biesecker won his first round by pin, then dropped his second match by decision, but came back to pin his next three opponents to take third.
“He got into a bad position (against Lopez of Sedgwick County) but wrestled tough the rest of the way,” he said.
Six other young Longhorns gained good experience at the meet.
Vlasin said the So. Valley tourney is set up a little differently, having athletes wrestle all the way out up to the 11th/12th place matches.
“So almost all of the wrestlers can get five matches in,” he said.
