Three wrestlers place at Bridgeport
Three Chase County wrestlers placed at the Bridgeport/Sidney Invitational on Saturday.
Sophomore Cody Duffy placed in the JV 145 lb. bracket, while junior Kenyan Biesecker placed fifth in the 138 lb. division and senior Trevor Peterson continued his winning streak with first place in the 182 lb. bracket.
“The competition was good at Bridgeport,” Head Coach Matt Vlasin said.
The Longhorns had eight competitors entered at Bridgeport, two in JV and six in varsity.
“The number of wrestlers was up this year so they decided to use a 16-man bracket,” Vlasin said.
“If you lost a match before the semifinals, the best you could do was fifth place. They did this to avoid any wrestler going over the five-match limit while wrestling through the consolation brackets,” he said.
His wrestlers did well, improving from the previous week, Vlasin added.
“Kenyan had his best tournament of the season,” he said. “In a normal bracket he probably would have finished third or fourth.”
Biesecker ran into a good wrestler from Gering.
“(Gering) wrestled tough and knocked him down to the consolation bracket,” Vlasin said.
Peterson also had a good day, Vlasin said.
After beating a couple different wrestlers from Cheyenne East, Peterson met up with last year’s state champ from Pine Bluffs, Wyoming in the championship match.
“Trevor was able to maintain control the entire match and win to walk away with first,” Vlasin added.
