State qualifier, team growth highlight wrestling season

Having a wrestler in the state finals is any coach’s season highlight, but CCS Coach Matt Vlasin also ranks his team’s growth this season up there, as well.
The work ethic put forth by senior Trevor Peterson gained him a spot in the Class C state finals at 182 lbs. Feb. 22 in Omaha.
His finals match was the third time this season Peterson would face Broken Bow’s Lathan Duda.
“I knew he could beat Duda,” Vlasin said this week.
But, as the undefeated Duda wrestled defense much of the match, it wasn’t to be. Peterson lost the close 5-3 decision.
Peterson, the Longhorn team’s only senior, finished the year with a 41-4 record. His high school career record topped out at 136-32.
Vlasin said Peterson’s constant effort to improve himself, and the success that brings, is a good example to Chase County’s younger wrestlers.
“I’ve never seen a kid work that hard. I know the extra hours he put in over Christmas break, or when the school was closed,” Vlasin said.
