Standout performances lift Lady Longhorns to home meet win

Brutal was how Coach Troy Hauxwell described the wind at last week’s Chase County Invite, but his girls’ track team turned in some standout performances anyway.
Their efforts gave the home team the meet win by more than 85 points on April 17.
With high winds much of the day, times and marks were affected overall, Hauxwell said, but that didn’t matter to several Chase County athletes.
One was Allison Owings, who won both the shot and discus by significant margins.
But it was her PR in the discus that Hauxwell noted as she threw it 126’4” for the gold medal. That was about three feet further than her previous best, he said.
While there was wind, Hauxwell said only the three Chase County throwers that day had either season’s best or personal best throws.
Earning third was Lauren Gockley, while Riley Mintling claimed the seventh place medal.
“I was really happy with our throwers that day,” he said.
Mallie McNair continued her dominance in the 400, and took gold again in the 800, both with good leads over the second place finisher.
McNair had a four gold medal day as part of the winning 1600 and 3200 meter relay teams, as well.
Adelaide Maxwell went home with four golds, too, winning the 100 and 200 races. She was also part of the championship 400 and 1600 meter relay teams.
And then there’s Peyton Fielder, who Coach Hauxwell said is “having an amazing season.”
Fiedler’s first place 100 meter hurdle time of 16.08 moved her to third fastest in Class C statewide, he said. Fielder was also on the gold 400 meter relay team, finished second in the 300 meter hurdles and took the bronze in the pole vault.
The fact Chase County athletes scored all three competitors in six events helped the team rack up such a big score for the team championship.
Team scoring: Chase County 218.5, Ogallala 133, Hershey 92.5, Dundy Co. Stratton 92, Perkins Co. 62, Ogallala JV 36, Garden Co. 5 and Chase Co. JV 2.
Here are the meet’s eight medalists.
