Spring soccer season canceled

The spring soccer season in Imperial is officially canceled.

Practices were supposed to begin the week of March 23.

Practices were postponed on March 16 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the original plan being once school was back in session, the season would be reevaluated.

The league announced March 30 that the season was officially canceled.

Per city of Imperial officials, city parks/recreation programs and use of parks are suspended until further notice.

This includes “use of the city ballfields, parks, gyms for games and practices,” which are prohibited until at least May 1, or until further notice.

Soccer organizer Abby McNair said there is hope of a potential summer high school soccer program. City officials said those registration fees will not be refunded at this time for that age group.

The city will be refunding all other soccer registrations for the younger players. Those refund checks will be mailed, according to Deputy City Clerk Tricia Moreno.

“It is important during this time of uncertainty that we remain calm and follow the recommendations that have been advised for the safety and protection of our community, family, and friends. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and patience in these efforts,” McNair said.
