Sporhase, Bussell lead late models at PC Raceway

Season finale set for Sunday, Sept. 1

Driving Justin Bussell’s late model car, Holyoke’s Garrett Sporhase sped to first place over Bussell in the Aug. 4 stock car racing dirt late model competition at Phillips County Raceway in Holyoke, Colorado.
Drivers hailed from four states for the racing entertainment, making a showing not only from Colorado and Nebraska but also Kansas and South Dakota.
Speaking of the evening’s races, promoter Joe Bellm said the weather elements, including heat and wind, were definitely against them Sunday, but after the sun went down, it was great racing.
As a result of Sunday’s experience, Bellm said they will be starting the season finale Sunday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. instead of the regular 5 p.m. The Labor Day holiday the next day makes this more doable, and Bellm feels the heat won’t be as intense with the later start.
Action on the track for the racing season finale Sept. 1 includes lightning sprints, as well as the regular modifieds, stocks, sport mods, hobby stocks, sprint cars, dwarfs and compacts.
Already looking ahead to the 2020 season, Bellm said they anticipate returning to Friday night lights.
Tentatively, he’s looking at action on the first and third Fridays in June through September for a total of eight races starting at 7:30 p.m. each of the evenings. By avoiding April and May racing, Bellm said they will stay away from school activities, as well as spring weather issues.
