Softball team still looking for first win

With four games completed, Chase County’s high school softball team is looking for its first win.
Coach Denise Smith said the team’s 0-4 record early this week is not a reflection of her team’s efforts. They’ve scored in the first inning three of those four games and are keeping errors at a minimum.
But with a young pitching squad that hasn’t seen much varsity action until now, Smith said defense will be important as more experienced teams are going to hit the ball.
In all but one of last week’s games, the Lady Longhorns tallied hits, although their opponents collected more.
Triangular at So. Valley
In the team’s season opener at So. Valley last Thursday, Chase County dropped both games in the triangular to Blue Hill and the hosts.
The first against Blue Hill was the best game Chase County has played in the first four, Coach Smith said.
Chase County scored in each of the first three innings and held onto a 3-1 lead when Blue Hill came to bat in the bottom of the second and scored eight.
Chase County sent another three across home plate, but that would be all of their scoring, losing the opener 6-11.
Earning the team’s five hits, all singles were Sarah Allen, Morgan Peterson, Sadie Peterson, Ashlie Benge and Emma DeGrasse.
Carissa Hill started on the mound, striking out one, walking three and giving up six hits in three innings of work. Morayah Cupp pitched an inning, also striking out one and walking three, giving up no hits.
Smith said the game was called early due to the time limit. She wished they could have played it out, feeling the teams were evenly matched.
The nightcap was a different story. Chase County faced So. Valley, who introduced a new pitcher against them who moved in from Colorado this year.
She faced just 10 Chase County batters in the three-inning game and struck out seven, as So. Valley took the 12-0 win.
Offensively, Chase County managed just one walk, two other batters grounded out and one was hit by a pitch to reach base.
“She was one of the better pitchers we’ve seen in awhile,” Smith said.
So. Valley tallied 10 hits in the game, eight off starter Cupp, who pitched one inning, giving up four walks. Hill went 1.1 innings and walked three.
Both So. Valley and Blue Hill are in the C6 District with Chase County. Cozad was announced last week by the NSAA as the site for the C6 tournament Oct. 4-5.
