Softball falls to Gering, Chadron

After a long week of multiple games played, the Longhorn softball team hosted Gering and Chadron last week.
While the Lady Longhorns gained experience and showed growth in both outings, they came up short of a win.
Chase County hosted a double header with Gering on Sept. 17.
In the opener, Gering won 17-7.
“Even though the score does not indicate it, this was one of our best games all year,” Head Coach Denise Smith said. “It was against a very good class B team, who just won the Scottsbluff tournament.”
Gering had beaten Chase County 0-11 in four innings at the Scottsbluff tournament.
However, the Lady Longhorns held the lead 5-3 through five innings last week.
“(Gering) scored four in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead,” Smith added. “Then they exploded in the top of the seventh for 10 runs on 10 hits.”
Offensively for the Longhorns, Ryley Vrbas, Morgan Peterson, Courtney Odens and Sadie Peterson each had two hits, and Sydnie Allen recorded one.
Scoring Chase County’s seven runs were Morgan Peterson (3), Odens (2), and Ashlie Benge and Ansley Maronde with one each.
“Courtney had a good night going two for four and drove in two RBIs,” Smith said.
During the second game, which Gering won 19-2, things were more difficult to get going, Smith said.
“We were still within reach in the fourth,” Smith added, then Gering took away the win.
Vrbas led offensively in game 2, tallying two hits and one run scored.
Morgan Peterson and Allen also had one hit, and Allen scored the second run for the Longhorns.
