Off-season growth key in rebuilding Longhorn football program
Develop. Develop. Develop.
That’s the approach Head Coach Nathan Gaswick and his coaching staff will take between now and next year’s football season after coming off a winless season.
Gaswick suspected this year was going to be a tough season due to the lack of experience on a mostly young team, with only four seniors. But he didn’t expect the Longhorns to go 0-fer.
The transition has to begin in the weight room, he said, especially with their first four games against bigger, C1 opponents.
He said his team has to get bigger and stronger and the only way to do that is hard work in the weight room from now through next season. That’s where the leadership develops as well.
Due to overall numbers, Gaswick said he found himself relying on players who hadn’t put the work in during the off-season, and it showed.
Those low roster numbers also forced him to throw some freshman and sophomores into the mix. While they gained valuable playing time, the experience wasn’t there.
This also marked his first year as head coach, which also meant he wants to install his own system.
He said he wanted to build on the strengths of the previous system, mixed in with his during this transitional year. To his disappointment, he didn’t get the buy-in that he was looking for.
So that’s why he’s going to emphasize developing his team from the ground up next year. It’s time to rock the boat, he added.
