Runners hit the hills at McCook meet

Just as expected, the terrain of Heritage Hills Golf Course proved a challenge for runners at the McCook Invitational last week.
Chase County runners were out of the medals at the large, competitive meet held Sept. 17, which drew athletes from Class A-D schools.
A total of 142 were at the start line in the boys’ varsity/JV division. Another 84 runners competing in the varsity/JV girls’ division started the race.
Longhorn Coach Carl Zuege said moving the McCook meet up two days from its normal Thursday schedule to Tuesday certainly affected his runners, who ran just five days earlier at the Chase County meet.
“It really didn’t fit great into our training schedule. We basically used it as a hill workout,” he said.
The coach said the team hadn’t scheduled in a lot of hill work prior to McCook’s meet. At times, they will work on hills on Mondays when the meet is later in the week.
Highest placing runner for Chase County on the girls’ side was Caelyn Long, who finished 20th overall in a field of 57. She run the course in 24:56.34.
