Pitching expected to be big strength for Imperial Legion baseball teams

Teams open season this weekend with home games Saturday

With more games on the schedule this summer, coaches for Imperial’s junior and senior Legion baseball teams are happy with the depth of their pitching staff.
Coach Bruce Peterson said they have nine to 10 guys who are able to step on the mound and throw strikes.
“Our numbers are really good. It’s one of the best years for our pitching staff,” he said.
Those nine to 10 who can pitch represent half of the team’s roster of 18.
Imperial opens play this weekend with a home junior double header Saturday at Campbell Park and a senior double header on Sunday against Elwood/Eustis in Elwood.
On Wednesday, the teams will be in Broken Bow for a junior/senior double header.
Peterson said positions are set, for the most part, for both teams. With only two true senior players, about 10 of the players will play in both junior and senior games most of the time.
In addition to the pitching numbers, Peterson sees another strength in the team’s love of the game. Many of them can play multiple positions.
“Carl (Zuege) and I have had the majority of these players since they played little league,” he said.
“We are seeing them starting at a higher level each year. It’s a crew that wants to get going and play,” he said.
