Winds swept across the baseball field on Sunday, June 7th, as the Pinnacle Bank Legion Horns hosted the Holdrege Phelps Medical Group in a junior-senior doubleheader.
The games began at exactly 2 p.m. with the junior game. The Horns battled through, but Holdrege gained control in the fourth inning. The visiting team gained eight runs, turning what had been a close game into a big gap for the Horns. Despite continuing to compete for one more inning, the Horns were unable to recover and suffered a loss with the final score of 11-1.
Although the scoreboard reflected a tough loss, Head Coach Chris Fryzek saw several encouraging signs from his junior squad. “I thought the junior team had a pretty decent day. I saw a lot of positive things out of the first game, even though the scoreboard was a little different than we wanted to come out,” Fryzek said.
Following the completion of the junior game, the senior teams took the field a little before 4:30 p.m. As the game began, the seniors stayed close to the opposing team for the first few innings. However, the game quickly shifted in the fifth inning. Holdrege Phelps Medical Group put together a 10-run inning that gained yet another major lead over the Horns. The game concluded in the fifth inning with the Horns falling 11-3.
Even with the disappointing results for both games, Fryzek remains optimistic about future games and the people who help make them successful. He praised both his coaching staff and the players who represent the Horns throughout the summer season. “I have an excellent group of assistant coaches, an excellent group from the community, and the administration that kind of helps put the program on. The kids have also just been wonderful. That’s from the college kids that are coming back all the way down to the 14-year-olds playing with us this year. We’re kind of gapped out in the middle there, but we’ve got really good kids and are hoping to see the numbers continue to increase and not go the other direction,” Fryzek said.
While the losses drop another pair of games into the record books, the Horns will return to Campbell Park for another home doubleheader against the Cambridge/Arapahoe Gladiators on Monday, June 8th. The evening will begin with the junior game at 5 p.m., followed by the senior contest at 7 p.m. Two days later, the Pinnacle Bank Horns will travel east to Lexington on Wednesday, June 10th. The junior game will begin at 5:00 Mountain Time, with the seniors following at 7:30.
