Peterson medals at Garden County; busy week ahead with three meets

Chase County competed in its first 2021 meet Saturday after the holiday break, traveling to the Garden County Invitational in Oshkosh.
Jaret Peterson returned with Chase County’s only medal—third place in the 220 lbs. weight class.
Teamwise, the Longhorns finished 11th in the field of 21.
Coach Matt Vlasin said his team appeared a bit sluggish Saturday.
“I felt we were in good shape but, mentally, we maybe weren’t at the top of our game,” he said.
He said the Longhorns definitely lost a few matches they shouldn’t have.
Peterson, a freshman, went 3-1 at the meet, losing in the semi-finals to Mitchell’s Nathan Coley, a senior and past state qualifier.
While Mitchell is in Chase County’s subdistrict and district, Vlasin isn’t worried about Peterson’s chances of advancing.
Perkins County’s Brandon Knoles finished second at 220. He and Peterson did not face each other at Garden County. Peterson defeated Knoles earlier in the season, giving Knoles one of his two season losses.
Kenyan Biesecker at 145 and Dawson Mollendor at 160 both finished 2-2 Saturday, and were just one match out of the medal rounds.
Nine Longhorns competed at Saturday’s tournament. Cayden White was gone, Vlasin said, and Aurora Griebel remains out with an injury.
Garden County was a large meet, with 21 teams bringing wrestlers. It would have been even bigger, but Colorado and Wyoming teams could not attend due to their states’ COVID restrictions.
