Peterson, Fisher headed to state wrestling

Chase County’s top two wrestlers all season long capped off their season with third place finishes in the C4 district to advance to this week’s state meet.

Junior Trevor Peterson at 170 and senior Evan Fisher at 195 rallied back from semifinal losses in the championship bracket to guarantee spots in the state meet.

Coach Matt Vlasin said each wrestler looked to be heading to the championships in their classes when misfortune occurred.

Vlasin said Peterson controlled the whole match but got called for stalling, costing him two points.

Vlasin said Peterson didn’t get credit for back points and the referee missed a clutch on Peterson’s singlet, which would have been another point.

His opponent got an escape with about five seconds left in the match to pull ahead to defeat Peterson 5-4.

Vlasin said the referee said he plain missed the hold. That point would have tied the match, Vlasin added.

In Fisher’s semifinal match,  he had his opponent on his back for nearly 40 seconds but could draw the pin from the referee.

Late in the match, Fisher got rolled over and in seconds the referee slapped the mat with a pin.

Vlasin said that was a frustrating loss to accept after Fisher couldn’t get a pin when he was in control. Then, in just seconds, the opponent got a pin over Fisher.

Vlasin said he felt his wrestlers didn’t get the same kind of chances their opponents got.
