More than 70 athletes out for track

A look at the calendar shows Chase County’s first high school track meet of the 2018 season is just two weeks away when Perkins County hosts a meet on March 22. With that in mind, it should be of no surprise to see Chase County athletes pounding the pavement and track, and working on event techniques. According to head coaches Carl Zuege and Troy Hauxwell, 38 boys and 35 girls are out for the Longhorn track teams this season. Above, middle and long distance runners on the boys’ team still had to avoid some piled snow on their run along Park Street Friday afternoon. Coach Hauxwell, below, guides his girls’ team through some warm-up drills as they complete their first week of practice on Friday. The boys’ team started practice a few days after the girls due to their extended basketball season. Chase County hosts its home meet on April 17. Sutherland will host the C9 district meet in which Chase County will compete May 10. (Johnson Publications photos)
