Minden no match in Longhorns’ 56-13 win

The one-win Minden Whippets proved to be no match for the Chase County Longhorns who rolled to a 56-13 win in action there Friday night.
One good thing that came from that rout was that Coach Dan Lenners got to play some of his younger players, starting late in the second quarter.
“That really helped those guys,” he said.
Plus, it helped keep his kids healthy as they go into one of their toughest games of the season Friday here against Chadron.
Chadron comes into the game at 7-1 while the Longhorns are 5-3.
Typically, this game is a physical game and Lenners expects nothing different Friday.
Chadron’s quarterbacks always have good throwing ability and their receivers catch well, Lenners said.
Lenners said the Longhorns are “playing good football right now.”
The fact the game is here at home is another plus, the coach said.
While the Longhorns’ chances of qualifying for the playoffs are slim, they must beat Chadron to keep those chances alive.
Lenners said the Longhorns would need help from several other teams to move up into the top 16 in wildcard points to make the playoffs. But he said it’s still possible.
Minden no match
The Longhorns scored on their first five possessions of the first half. They added a pick-six and punt return for two more scores and led 50-0 at half.
The jayvees got the final score late in the fourth on a pass from Bennett Bauerle to Kobe Clevenger.
Minden did add two scores in the second half to make the final score 56-13.
The Longhorns’ first score came on a one-yard pass from quarterback Caleb Weiss to end Braden Space.
The score was set up on a 27-yard bubble screen from Weiss to Scott Wheeler.
The next score came three plays later when Kadin Vrbas picked off a Minden pass and went 45 yards for the score.
After forcing a Minden punt, the Longhorns converted a fake punt on a pitch to Wheeler, good for 31 yards.
On fourth-and-five from the Minden 12, Weiss found Parker Dillan in the end zone. Space added the PAT kick for a 23-0 lead.
