McCook hills good tune up for cross country team

    Preparing for last week’s cross country meet at the hilly Heritage Hills course at McCook, Coach Carl Zuege took his kids out in the country Monday to get some conditioning in on the hills east of Imperial. “We worked really hard Monday,” Zuege said.
    Believe it or not, Zuege said there’s only four weeks of the season left, including state.
    So more hill work at McCook’s meet last week should only help his team going forward. Zuege said they went into the McCook meet with the intent to work on conditioning.
    This week, the cross country team will compete at Dundy County Stratton today (Thursday). Monday they travel to Kearney for the UNK meet which is held on the same course as the state meet.
    The Longhorns will get 10 days off to prepare for the SPVA meet Thursday, Oct. 10, with the district meet the following week.
    Running conditions were less that ideal at McCook with temperatures hovering in the low 90s.     
    That, coupled with the hard training earlier in the week and a field that included Classes A-D kept the Longhorns outside of the top 15 for a medal.
    On the boys’ side, Zuege said Kalen Wallin ran a strong race, finishing just one place off a medal. He added that Landis Beverly put together a good race.
    Mason Nordhausen has been nursing a minor muscle pull so Zuege held him out.
    On the girls’ side, Maddi Brown led the team with a solid 17th place finish.
    Caelyn Long, running in the jayvee competition, finished as the Longhorns’ second runner overall and took second in the jayvee race.
