Love of baseball exhibited in Dan Lenners’ painting

    Most people who know Dan Lenners of Imperial are keenly aware of his love of baseball.
    So it didn’t take much arm twisting when he was asked to paint a likeness of Baseball Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander for Nebraska’s Baseball Hall of Fame.
    Alexander grew up in the town of Elba, Nebraska and is known for his pitching that helped the St. Louis Cardinals win the World Series in 1926.
    Alexander was an MLB player from 1911-30, starting and ending his career with the Philadelphia Phillies. He also pitched for the Chicago Cubs.
    Nebraska’s Baseball Hall of Fame is in Beatrice, where Lenners played for the Beatrice Bruins during his college summers.
    His coach in Beatrice was Bob Steinkamp, who is now president of the Nebraska Hall’s board of directors.
    “We’re pretty good friends,” Lenners said.
    So when he was asked by Steinkamp to paint the likeness of Alexander for Nebraska’s Hall of Fame, Lenners said it was easy to agree to it.
    He finished the painting last week, and hopes to deliver it in December if he and wife Jane travel there for Christmas to see family.
    The watercolor of Alexander uses only black, gray and white colors, Lenners said, giving it a vintage look.
    In the 1926 World Series, Alexander pitched complete game victories in Games 2 and 6.    According to the book “The Glory of Their Times,” teammate Bob O’Farrell said after the Game 6 win, Alexander had a night out and was still feeling the effects when he
