Friday afternoon, Sept. 26, the Longhorns Football Team traveled to Alliance for the start of District play. The Bulldogs came into the game with a 2-2 record.
CCS won the toss and elected to differ until halftime, so the Bulldogs got the ball first. Starting from their own 39 what looked like a backwards pass was recovered by the Longhorns, but the refs said it wasn’t a reverse pass. The Dogs put together a five minute drive, traveling 61 yards and culminating with a one yard run by Trini Trejo. On the extra point attempt, the Bulldogs pitched to the halfback, who threw to an open receiver in the endzone for two..
On the snap, the QB pitched it to the halfback, who threw for a successful two-point conversion.
Tate Hubbard returned the kick to the Longhorn 34, to start the first drive. After only gaining four yards on the first two downs and then an incomplete pass, due to not having any time to set up the play, the Horns were forced to punt.
The Bulldogs got a good return on the punt and set up shop at the Longhorn 35. The defense made a good stop on fourth and goal at the eight yard line, breaking up the pass and taking over on downs.
The Longhorn offense couldn’t move the ball and had to punt from their own 7 yard line. Standing at the back of his endzone, Tarango Flores didn’t get a very good punt, going out of bounds at the CCS 18.
It only took one play for the Bulldogs QB, sophomore Jay Shelmadine to connect with Espen Lanik, for the Bulldogs second score. On the two point attempt, Alliance lined up for a trick play and it worked to lead the game 0-16 with 1:03 left in the first quarter.
The Horns went three and out, giving the ball back to the bulldogs at their own 23, on the second play of the second quarter.
After the Bulldogs drove to midfield, Brextin Moreno went up and made an interception for the Longhorns, but the refs threw a flag for pass interference, extending the drive. Five plays later, Trejo scored on a 21 yard run. The other starting running back, Caysen Robertson, ran the two point conversion in.
The Horns had good starting field position on the next drive near midfield, but a collision in the backfield caused Krayton Paisley to fumble and the Dogs covered it up.
On the first snap from the CCS 48, Robertson took a direct snap and broke through the entire middle of the Longhorn line for a touchdown, but a block in the back erased the score.
That just delayed the score. The Horns didn’t have an answer for the power of the Dogs and they drove down for another score with 4:21 left in the first half.
The Horns started from their own 37 on the next drive, and on third and 17Hubbard picked up the first Longhorns first-down of the game on a 24 yard screen pass. Four plays later, the Horns were forced to punt. The Bulldog return man had some indecision on if he should field the ball or not, and when he did, he was hit and Levy Jurado recovered the ball in the endzone, to put the Horns on the board. Kick by Moreno was good, making it a 7-32 game with 2:39 left in the half.
This is where things went from bad to worse. The Horns had a short kick, with Lanik fielding it at the 40, breaking a few tackles and going in for score. On the Horns next possession, Paisley’s pass was picked off and returned to the Longhorn 11. It only took one play for the Bulldogs to punch it in. The two-point conversion failed when Thomas Maddux intercepted the pass in the endzone, leaving the score 7-46 at the half.
The second half was pretty short with a running clock. The Horns defense made some adjustments and shut-out the Dogs in the second half, while adding a touchdown from Tate Hubbard on a 64 yard run. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the final score, 13-46.
The Longhorns rushed for 97 yards and had 70 yards through the air, for a total of 167 total yards.
The Bulldogs rushed for 238 yards and passed for 99 for a total of 337.
The Horns had two interceptions and a lost fumble while the Bulldogs just lost one fumble.
