Longhorns win final regular season game, fall in subdistricts

The Chase County Longhorns finished off their regular season at home Friday with a 64-57 win over the Sutherland Sailors.
That gave the Longhorns their first back-to-back wins of the season, having defeated St. Pat’s Feb. 3.
Friday’s win sent the Longhorns into the C1-11 subdistrict with a mark a 5-17.
The Longhorns faced Cozad in the play-in game of the tournament and saw their season come to an end, falling to Cozad 57-31.
Cozad went on to face top-seeded Gothenburg Tuesday, falling 71-56 to the 24-2 Swedes.
Hershey defeated Ogallala in the other half of the bracket Tuesday, setting up a Hershey-Gothenburg face-off Thursday.
Sutherland
Coach Carl Zuege said it was good to see his kids close out the regular season with a win.
But Sutherland didn’t go down easy.
Zuege said the Longhorns took advantage of the Sailors’ lack of size with Cody Williams controlling the inside.
What Sutherland lacked on the inside they made up for with their shooting outside. Zuege said they shot the ball extremely well all night, keeping the game close.
