Longhorns take fourth place in SPVA; injuries hit roster
The week of SPVA tournament play started off strong for the Longhorns with a home win against Perkins County.
Out of Chase County’s 73 total points, 51 of those came from 3-pointers.
“That’s pretty impressive,” Head Coach Chris Bartels said. “As a team, we had 17 (3-pointers). I believe the previous record was 15 in a single game.”
Perkins County tallied 41 points on the night, up from their 26 points scored against the Longhorns the previous week.
“A lot of times when you play a team twice in a row, usually the team that loses will kind of close that gap,” Bartels said.
That wasn’t the case on Jan. 21.
In addition to breaking the Chase County team 3-pointers per game record, junior Mason Nordhausen set a school record for individual 3-pointers per game, hitting nine that night.
Treys were the name of the game against Perkins County. By the end of the first quarter, the Longhorns had hit five of them.
As the second quarter started, the Longhorns went on another run, leaving the Plainsmen in a scoring drought.
By halftime, the score was 32-12, Longhorns.
Perkins County did bounce back somewhat in the fourth quarter, but by that time all of the bench was on the floor for the Longhorns.
Nordhausen was the lead scorer for Chase County with a total of 32 points. In addition to his nine treys, he also sunk two buckets and hit one free throw.
Cedric Maxwell and Taylor Jablonski led defensively. On rebounds, Jablonski came out with six rebounds and two steals, while Maxwell had five rebounds and five steals.
On a few of those steals, Maxwell attempted dunks like his successful one at Kimball, but was unable to make one hit.
Also scoring against the Plainsmen were Kobe Clevenger, Brandon Mintling, Bennett Bauerle, Ryan Bernhardt and Jake German.
