Longhorns run winning streak to seven games

Chase Co. wins SPVA opener over Sutherland

 The Chase County boys’ basketball team advanced to face second seeded Hershey with a 67-24 win over Sutherland in Monday’s first round of the SPVA conference tournament.
As the third seed, Chase County’s transition game put Sutherland (1-10) on its heels. The Longhorns found their way to the rim and the free throw line often in the first quarter. CCS led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Longhorns scored the first five points of the second quarter as the lead continued to grow. CCS was up 35-12 at halftime and cruised in the second half.
Cedric Maxwell led three Longhorns in double-digit scoring, totaling 15 points. Clay Meeske and Jake German scored 10 points each. Mason Nordhausen and Keenan Cole scored nine points apiece.
Maxwell added six rebounds and five assists. Nordhausen had six steals.
CCS forced 26 turnovers and scored 32 points off turnovers.
The Longhorns (10-5) will play Hershey (14-1) at 8 p.m. CT in North Platte Thursday. The tournament will wrap up Saturday.
Busy week of ball
    It’s been a busy time for the Longhorns.
    CCS beat 10-2 Southern Valley Jan. 12.
    The Longhorns had their hands full in the first quarter. Cole scored seven points for CCS, but the Longhorns gave up two conventional three point plays. Both teams were scoreless over the final 3:27 of the quarter.
    Chase County’s offense found another gear in the second quarter. Five straight points by Kade Anderson gave CCS a 20-19 lead. The Longhorns scored the final eight points of the quarter to lead 28-22 at halftime.
    CCS put the game away for good in the third quarter. The Longhorns opened the half with a 10-4 run and held an 11 point advantage, 47-36, heading into the fourth quarter.
    Able to maintain a 10 point lead throughout the final quarter, CCS won 63-49.
    Anderson had a big night, scoring 22 points. Cole finished with 14 points and Maxwell scored 12. Maxwell also had seven assists.
    The Longhorns soundly beat Perkins County (6-8)Thursday.
    CCS trailed for most of the game’s first 4:30. Cole scored four points over the final 24 seconds of the first quarter to give Chase County a 20-14 lead.
    The Longhorns increased that lead to 28-19, but the Plainsmen scored seven straight points and cut the gap to 28-26. CCS went on a 9-4 run to take a firmer grasp on the game going into halftime.
    CCS took total control in the second half, outscoring Perkins County 33-8.
    Anderson scored a team high 16 points, followed by Brandon Mintling with 13 in the 70-38 win. Nordhausen scored 11 points, had seven rebounds and nabbed five steals. Maxwell had eight rebounds.
    CCS traveled to Gothenburg (2-11) Friday.
