Longhorns run tough course at McCook

There’s no other way to describe it—McCook’s Heritage Hills is a tough course.
Chase County’s cross country teams got a taste of the hilly course last Thursday when the varsity teams, JVs and junior high runners competed at the McCook Invite.
Jordan Jablonski was the single runner off both Longhorn varsity teams to come home with a medal in 12th place. Fifty-six crossed the finish in the varsity girls’ race.
“It’s a tough course. It was good to get in some hill work. We look at it as a good, hard workout,” Longhorn Coach Carl Zuege said.
He said both teams ran well in packed races.
Saying the teams won’t see a regular season course like that again this fall, the focus now is speed work, he said, with an eye on their return to Ogallala for this year’s district meet in three weeks.
In fact, the teams will be in Ogallala today (Thursday) for the Ogallala meet, run on the same Crandell Creek Golf Course as districts.
On Monday, however, they’ll be back on the hills as they compete at the UNK meet in Kearney.
Mason Nordhausen was the highest CCS finisher on the boys’ side with 23rd place. Seventy-five runners finished the varsity boys’ division.
Among the JV girls, Matalie Wallin was 10th overall, crossing first for the Longhorns.
In the junior high division, Haven Hauxwell was first across for Chase County in 11th place.
Coach Zuege said it’s good to see most of his runners now over the sickness they’ve dealt with the past two to three weeks.
