Friday night, August 29, the Longhorn football team traveled to Yuma Co. for the season opener in football. Unfortunately, the Horns came up on the short end of a 7-21 score.
The Longhorns got the ball to start the game and drove down the field to the Yuma 25, where they faced a fourth down and 11. Tate Hubbard was only able to get to the 17, turning the ball over on downs.
Yuma took over and drove the length of the field, scoring on a one yard run from their QB. The kick was good and Yuma led 7-0.
After trading a few possesions, the Horns turned over the ball deep in their own territory on a fumbled snap. Yuma took advantage and ran in another touchdown with 7:46 left in the half.
The defenses stepped up and there was no more scoring until the fourth quarter. Yuma hit on a nine yard pass for their third touchdown. The kick was good and Chase County trailed 21-0.
On the ensuing kick, the Longhorns started at their own 25 with 5:11 remaining in the game. Krayton Paisley hit Hubbard on a screen pass that went for 71 yards down to the Yuma 4 yard line. Three plays later, Paisley connected with Conner Einspahr for Chase County’s first score of the year. The kick was good and the Horns trailed by 14.
With only a short time left, the Horns tried an onside kick and recovered the ball after a Yuma player touched it at the Horns 49, plus Yuma was called for unnecessary roughness, giving the Horns the ball at the Yuma 36.
After going nowhere on the first three downs, Paisley tried a desperation pass that was intercepted to finish the game with the score of 21-7 in favor of Yuma.
Friday, Sept. 5, the Longhorns will play the Gothenburg Swedes at Home starting at 6:00. Gothenburg won their first game over Ogallala 28-11 on August 29.
