Chase County senior Kenyan Biesecker wraps up Wauneta-Palisade freshman Trey McCrumb Friday night during the teams’ dual meet in Imperial.

Longhorns finish full week with trio of outings, including home tourney

Chase County’s wrestlers had a busy week with three back-to-back meets, but it helped having two of them at home.
After hosting a dual with Wauneta last Thursday, the Longhorns traveled to Hershey for Friday’s SPVA Conference meet, then hosted the Chase County Invite Saturday.
At SPVA, the Longhorns brought home a third place finish, then placed sixth at their home tournament.
At Thursday’s SPVA, numbers were down, said Coach Matt Vlasin, resulting in several brackets being wrestled in round robin format.
Eight of Chase County’s wrestlers garnered medals with top four placings. Vlasin said some of those medals, however, came despite finishing with no wins due to few wrestlers in those brackets.
Cayden White at 113 lbs. was the only Chase County champion, finishing 3-0 on the day, all by pin.
“It was a good day for Cayden. It built a lot of confidence in him,” Vlasin said.
Dawson Mollendor at 160 and Jaret Peterson, 220, finished in second. Both went 2-1 in the day’s competition.
“Dawson had an awesome day,” Vlasin said.
Mollendor won his first two matches, both just under 40 seconds into the first period. He faced Bridgeport’s Steven Menke (7-1) in the finals, losing a close 9-8 decision.
“Dawson put up one heck of a match. He almost beat him,” he said.
Peterson (18-6) also won his first two matches with pins, then came up against Perkins County’s Brandon Knoles (19-3).
Knoles won the 1-0 decision on an escape he managed near the end of the second period. The two would meet again two days later at the Chase County Invitational.
Earning third place medals were Kenyan Biesecker, 145, with a 2-1 finish, and Cody Duffy, at 152, who went 3-1 on the day.
Brice Vitosh, 2-2 for the day, garnered fourth at 152 after he was pinned by teammate Duffy.
Bridgeport claimed the SPVA title by just half a point over Sutherland.
Chase Co. tournament
With 15 teams scoring at Saturday’s Chase County meet, Coach Vlasin said he was happy with a sixth place finish.
Four Longhorns earned medals—seconds by Biesecker and Peterson, third by White and a fifth place finish for Mollendor.
But it was costly with injuries for Chase County, as Arturo Miscles suffered a concussion, Mollendor broke his nose and Biesecker’s Kimball opponent was disqualified in the semi-finals after being assessed four penalty points for illegal moves, some leaving the CCS senior with minor injuries, Vlasin said.
Biesecker was 3-1 for the day, and had advanced to the finals after Kimball’s Trey Schindler was disqualified. He lost by pin to Bayard’s Beau Lake late in the final period for second.
Peterson only had two matches, after earning  byes all the way into the semi-finals, and was the No. 2 seed among seven in his bracket.
He met his nemesis, Knoles of Perkins County in the finals, where Peterson lost a close 4-3 battle.
Vlasin said his 220 lb. wrestler was disappointed the way the seeding panned out.
It was another good outing for White, who finished 2-1 Saturday. After dropping his first match, he won his next two with a 42 second pin and then a major decision in the consolation finals.
Despite breaking his nose in his first round match, Mollendor went on to finish fifth at 160 lbs. with his 3-2 showing.
Vlasin said due to the injury, which was unintentional, Mollendor was forced to wrestle a bit tentative the rest of the day.
“I have to admire him for wanting to stay in there and finish,” Vlasin said.
Miscles suffered a concussion early in his contests, and had to forfeit his final two matches. He’ll likely be out of competition this week, Vlasin said.
