It was a tough night on the gridiron Friday, Oct. 3, when the Chadron Cardinals came to town. Chadron’s record was 4-1, with their only loss coming to a very good Gothenburg Team.
It was all Chadron in the first half. Chase County had no answer for the Cardinals on defense, allowing the Cardinals to score three touchdowns in the first quarter and two more in the second.
On offense, the Horns were unable to get a drive started, only picking up one first down in the first half. The Chadron defensive line was dominating the line of scrimmage, not allowing the Horns to get any kind of rhythm in the rushing or passing game.
In the first quarter, Chadron scored on their first possession, running the ball in for a TD from 35 yards out. Every possession that the Cardinals had in the first half, started in Longhorn territory.
The second score for the Cardinals came on a 23 yard touchdown pass. The Chadron kicker was 7-7 on extra point attempts. Rounding out the first quarter scoring was another touchdown pass from 18 yards out for Chadron, leaving the score 0-21 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Chadron had touchdown runs of one and 19 yards, bringing the score to 0-35 at the half, which meant there would be a running clock for the second half.
Chadron had two more touchdown runs in the third quarter from 31 and eight yards out, bringing the score to 0-49.
In the fourth quarter, Krayton Paisley was able to hit Carter Kuenning for a 20 yard touchdown, for the Longhorns first and final score of the night. The game ended with the score 6-49.
The Longhorns were held to just 21 yards rushing and 99 yards in the air, while Chadron rushed for 215 yards and passed for 77. Each team had one turnover.
