Dawson Mollendor had a breakout game against Ogallala, finishing with 99 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. With a big hole from the offensive line, Mollendor heads downfield after taking the handoff from quarterback Ryan Bernhardt.

Longhorns continue to build experience in loss to Ogallala

Head Coach Nathan Gaswick knows he putting a young team on the field. He also knows they’re gaining valuable experience that will help them when district play begins.
The Longhorns are still looking for that crucial first win of the season after falling to Ogallala 26-18 Friday night.
But Gaswick knows that win is coming—maybe Friday when they travel to Mitchell.
Why does he feel that way? It’s because he saw effort from his kids Friday that he hasn’t seen in the first two games.
“I felt effort-wise that was the first showing, in my mind, that I believe our community was proud of the effort our kids gave,” he said this week.
“It’ was a good representation of what I expect out on the football field regarding effort,” he added.
The Longhorns came out with some different looks offensively, which will likely be common going forward.
Gaswick said they are going to continue to tweak the offense to build on the team’s strengths.
Among the changes was putting two backs in the backfield. That led to a breakout game for sophomore Dawson Mollendor who broke away for several big runs and finished with 99 yards rushing.
That also takes some of the pressure off quarterback Ryan Bernhardt in that his isn’t the sole target teams can focus on.
Defensively, Gaswick said they added some freshman to the mix last week. For a big game, he said they stepped up well and didn’t shy away.

Ogallala opens 13-0 lead
The Longhorns found themselves down early Friday. They gave up a 23-yard touchdown pass to the Indians on the first possession of the game.
Later in the quarter they recovered a fumble to stop an Indian drive but turned it right back over with a fumble on their own 40.
