Despite being one of the smallest schools in Class C1, the Chase County Longhorns battled their way into this year’s playoffs to cap off a successful season.
The Longhorns finished the regular season with a 5-4 record and were just one win away from a district championship.
After a rough 2-3 start, Dan Lenner’s team ran off three consecutive district wins to get them into playoff consideration.
Their strength of schedule was evidenced by the fact that five of their nine opponents qualified for postseason play, with all four loses coming to those playoff qualifiers.
A win over Ogallala in the final regular season game would have clinched the district title and an automatic playoff berth. As it was, the Longhorns’ wildcard points vaulted them into the playoffs as the 13th seed in the 16-team playoff.
They fell to 9-0 Pierce in the first round, who is just one win away from the state championship game. They play undefeated Adams Central this week in the semifinals.
