Longhorn wrestlers look toward subdistricts with hopes to advance

It’s now the post-season and Chase County wrestlers are looking to advance to districts and the state tournament.
They’ll face a different format to do that this season, due to COVID-19 efforts to keep numbers at a minimum where possible.
Like their fellow basketball athletes, high school wrestlers will have a subdistrict tournament this year, followed by districts.
The first step in that process arrives Saturday when Chase County travels to Mitchell for the C4-A subdistrict tourney, along with Arcadia/Loup City, Gordon-Rushville, Hershey, Mitchell, O’Neill, Ravenna and Valentine.
Wrestling Saturday in Mitchell gets underway at 10 a.m. Four family members per wrestler will be allowed in, said CCS Coach Matt Vlasin.
The top four finishers at subdistricts will advance to an eight-man bracket at the C-4 district tourney in Valentine on Feb. 13.
Vlasin said due to the distance to Valentine, it’s likely they will drive to Valentine Friday and stay overnight before first rounds Saturday morning.
Med. Valley meet
Six Longhorns competed at the Medicine Valley tournament in Curtis Friday, with one champion emerging, Jaret Peterson at 220 lbs.
Peterson, now 30-7, took two opponents down by fall and won a narrow 8-7 decision over Southwest’s Clayton Hardy (25-11) in the finals.
The only other Chase County place winner was Cayden White at 113 lbs., who finished third in a three-man round robin.
It was a smaller tournament than usual with 12 teams scoring.
While it was smaller with mostly Class D schools, Vlasin noted there were three state-ranked Class D wrestlers there.
Brice Vitosh at 152 lbs. won
