Longhorn softball still looking for a win

The Chase County Schools Lady Longhorn softball team played two doubleheaders last week, totaling four games.
The Longhorns hosted Holyoke, Colorado on Sept. 3 and traveled to So. Valley on Sept. 5, but were unable to tally a win.
Holyoke
CCS came out “a little slow” in the first game against Holyoke, Head Coach Denise Smith said.
Holyoke won the first game 17-9.
Leading offensively for the Longhorns were Ryley Vrbas and Morgan Peterson, each with two runs.
Also scoring in the first game were Sydnie Allen, Ansley Maronde, Carissa Hill, Valerie Herbert and Ella O’Neil.
Hill led off on the mound and was relieved in the third inning by Peterson.
“Errors and communication hurt us in that game,” Smith said.
The Longhorns had seven errors in the game.
In the second game, the Longhorns got the bats moving, as they tallied 15 hits.
Maronde was the offensive leader for the second game, bringing in three hits and scoring twice.
Also scoring for the Longhorns were Vrbas, Peterson, Ashlie Benge, Morayah Cupp, Courtney Odens, Hill,  Jesusita Ruiz and O’Neil.
“It’s interesting when you lose that first game to see how the second one plays out,” Smith said.
The Longhorns again gave Holyoke eight runs in the first inning, but they pulled ahead—even tying the game in the sixth inning.
The Dragons came away with the 19-17 win, though, pulling in two more runs in the seventh inning which Chase County couldn’t answer.
So. Valley
CCS played So. Valley again  in a pair of games Sept. 5.
The first time the Longhorns faced the Lady Eagles was at a triangular with Blue Hill on Aug. 27, where the Eagles came away with the win, 13-2.
So. Valley took both of last week’s games as well, 10-0 and 11-1.
In the first game, there were no runs scored by Chase County. Cupp, Maronde and Odens had hits.
“On the bright side, which I can always find, we didn’t  commit the errors,” Smith said. “They earned those hits and those runs.”
In the second game, the only run was scored by Peterson, who got on base after getting hit by a pitch.
“I can live with that easier than I can, hey, let’s give them a bunch of errors,” Smith said.
“We could have had them out, you know, but if they’re hitting doubles and singles and just moving people around, then that’s what it is,” she said.
Coming up
The Longhorns traveled to Wray, Colorado for a varsity double header on Tuesday.
Their next contests will be at the Scottsbluff tournament this Friday and Saturday.
Different from years past, there will be two pools played, one at the fields at Scottsbluff High School and the other at Gering.
CCS’s varsity games will be played at Gering.
Friday games will include contests against Sterling, Colorado; Gering and Alliance.
JV games will all be played at Scottsbluff. CCS JV will play Gering. No other games were decided as of Monday.
